We’re delighted to welcome Alannah Norton to the Board of Trustees.

Alannah is new to the Trustee role and became involved with AMIS after seeing the opportunity online and recognising how closely it aligned with both her professional skills and personal values. Growing up with three brothers, Alannah has a strong appreciation for the importance of support services for men, and is deeply committed to contributing to improving outcomes for men’s health and wellbeing across Scotland.

Professionally, Alannah works as a Marketing Manager in the utilities sector and brings over a decade of experience in communications, with a strong specialism in digital and public sector communications. Prior to her current role, she spent more than eight years working across the Scottish Government, building a solid understanding of strategic, accessible, and purpose-driven communications. Career highlights include completing the CIPR Specialist Diploma in Digital Communications during the COVID-19 pandemic while working full-time, achieving a high pass mark.

Alongside her professional work, Alannah recently launched a small creative business designing and selling handmade greetings cards, reflecting a genuine passion for creativity and storytelling. She strongly believes in the power of using great communication to design engaging, meaningful content that serves a clear purpose and creates real impact. As a Trustee, Alannah is particularly interested in supporting AMIS’s digital communications at a strategic level – including social media – and is motivated by a wider commitment to helping people, understanding individual backgrounds, and contributing to positive change.

We are looking forward to leading AMIS through a new phase of development which will see greater stability, increased capacity and new outreach work to better support those who need our services. We have a new Chair and changes within our Board of Director positions, as from January our Helpline team shall increase to 3 staff and I volunteer from January.

We are pleased to report that recently secured funding from the Tudor Trust, National Lottery Community Fund, and the Scottish Government’s Victim at the Centre Fund has effectively tripled AMIS’s turnover, and potential impact, for the next three years.

As an expanding organisation, we have engaged with the Cranfield Trust to help us bring additional skills and expertise to the board; building our team to meet the demands of our new situation.

This is an exciting time to help build and lead a committed team and guide our new projects to maximise the very real difference AMIS can make to the lives of men across Scotland who experience domestic or intimate partner abuse, and to their families.

AMIS Location

The head office of AMIS is located in Dalkeith although we provide our support to callers across the whole of Scotland Volunteer activities, meetings or training activities may also be held elsewhere or via Zoom using a hybrid flexible working model.

Governance

Currently six board meetings take place each year (including an AGM) plus six focus meetings. The last AGM took place in December 2022. There is opportunity for staff and board training to ensure AMIS remains focused on current and developing work for the year ahead.

About AMIS

Founded in 2010, AMIS provides Scotland’s only national specialist helpline, involving longer-term casework if needed, for men experiencing domestic or partner abuse. We support individuals aged 16+ who identify as men and anyone with concerns about such men. AMIS also provides training for other services wishing to learn more about supporting male victims and engages with policymakers to highlight the need for the support provided for all victims and survivors of domestic abuse in Scotland.

AMIS currently employs two full-time and three part-time members of staff. We are utilizing our recently secured funding to recruit another new helpline staff member to increase capacity and have recently launched a new volunteer outreach project and increased our advocacy work.

Further background information on the charity; its work, challenges and successes may be found in our most recent Annual Report 2021, available from our website, here.
