Domestic abuse can affect anyone, regardless of sex, gender identity, age or sexual orientation. We want to live in a Scotland that is free of abuse. The below list contains different community groups, organisations and services that you may find beneficial.

Going to see a counsellor or psychotherapist is a big decision. Anyone call call themseves a counsellor and set up a private practice so it’s important to find a therapist who is fully qualified and works to the professional standards. Before making an appointment you might want to ask if they have experience of working with male victims.

Local Services

  • ASSIST– specialist advocacy and support service provides court appearance support to male victims in Edinburgh
  • Allister Murdoch – Alister is a psychotherapist, trainer, public speaker and peer advisor working from a private practice in Central Edinburgh (Randolph Place) and online. Specialises in providing counselling and psychotherapy service for men (cis gender/trans/non binary) aged 18+, regardless of sexuality or relationship style. Allister is an Accredited Registrant member of the NCPS and a Registered Member of the BACP.   
  • John Maguire – working from his own practice in south central Edinburgh (Minto Street) John is a counsellor, psychotherapist, clinical supervisor and trainer, who specialises in therapeutically with men. John is a registered and accredited by the BACP.
  • Citizen’s Advice Scotland – a national service offering free advice on a range of issues   
  • Victim Support Edinburgh Information advice and support for victims of crime including court support.

Community Groups

  • Andys Man Club – National men’s support group meets every Monday 7pm in Edinburgh North Merchiston Club, South Gyle Shopping Centre and Prestonpans RFC Clubhouse.
  • Keep The Heid – Cafes are a safe place to talk and occur weekly 7-9pm, Tuesdays at The Fraser Centre, Tranent; Thursdays at The Hope Rooms, North Berwick; Fridays at The Trinity Centre, Haddington. 
  • Dads Rock – Scotland wide group which supports fathers through peer support, local group activities, offering a weekly playgroup meet up’s, antenatal workshops and children’s hairstyle workshops based at The Gorgie Mem in Edinbrugh and online.
  • Edinburgh Men’s Group Circle – a men’s group for self-development, socialising and growth
  • Fathers Network Scotland – National agency supporting fathers in Scotland has an active Edinburgh presence
  • FearFree – provides a range of support information and advice for men and self identifying men in Edinburgh
  • LGBTHealth – different events and support services aimed at all LGBT people in Edinburgh
  • Men’s Shed – Leith based men’s community group 

National Services
