Dating Abuse Explained

Dating abuse is similar to domestic abuse. It is when someone in a romantic or sexual relationship is harmed by their boyfriend or girlfriend. This harm can be physical (such as biting and punching), verbal (such as name-calling), sexual (such as unwanted contact) and emotional (such as purposefully upsetting someone). It can happen in person and online.

What to do if you are experiencing dating abuse?

If you are ever worried, you should speak with someone you trust. It is better to have a chat before things get worse. A teacher, parent or school counsellor are usually the best people to speak with. Friends can also listen and talk to a trusted adult with you.

If you are 16 or older, you can get in touch with AMIS. If you are younger than 16, you can speak with Childline. Both services are free and confidential.

If you think you have been sexually abused, you should reach out for support. Trusted adults and services like AMIS will not judge you. We are here to make sure you’re happy and safe.
